Lean: Video Compressor
Privacy Policy
Lean compresses your videos entirely on your iPhone. It contains no networking code, so no video, thumbnail or statistic is ever uploaded to the Service Provider or to any third party.
Overview
This privacy policy applies to the Lean app (the "Application") for iOS on iPhone and iPad, created by Cihat SALIK (the "Service Provider"). The Application is offered as a service and is intended for use "AS IS".
Lean shrinks the videos that are already in your Photos library and writes the smaller version back in the original's place. Your videos, their thumbnails, the compression previews and your savings history are read, processed and stored on your device only.
Your Videos Never Leave Your Device
This is the point of the App, so it is worth stating precisely.
- Lean contains no networking code. There is no HTTP client, no socket, no SDK that opens a connection. It therefore cannot upload a video even accidentally.
- No video, audio track, frame, thumbnail, preview or extracted metadata is sent to the Service Provider or to any third party, at any point, for any purpose.
- Compression runs on your device's own media hardware. The source is read from your library, encoded locally, and the result is written back to your library. The file never passes through a server.
- There is no account and no sign-in, so nothing in the App is tied to an identity.
- There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no attribution or advertising framework, and no third-party service of any kind embedded in the App.
- Your savings history and statistics ("GB saved", the monthly chart, the streak) are a JSON file in the App's own Application Support directory. They are local numbers; they are not reported anywhere.
The only network activity connected to Lean is Apple's own, and the Service Provider does not operate or receive data from any of it: the App Store downloads and updates the App, StoreKit verifies your purchases, and — if a video you selected lives only in iCloud Photos — iOS downloads that video from your own iCloud account so it can be compressed. That download is a transfer between you and Apple, inside Apple's framework, using your own iCloud storage.
Photos Access and What It Is Used For
Lean asks for access to your photo library because it cannot compress a video it cannot read. iOS controls this permission and you can change or revoke it at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos.
- Full access lets Lean scan every video, show you its real size and estimated saving, replace it in place and return the compressed copy to the same albums. Album membership can only be preserved with full access.
- Limited access works: Lean operates on the subset of videos you selected and nothing else.
- Add-only access is used when the App writes the compressed video back.
- Declining access leaves the App usable only through the Share Extension, where you hand it a single video yourself.
Lean does not request access to your camera, microphone, contacts, calendar or location, and cannot read them. Notifications are optional and are asked for only after an explanation screen; they are used to tell you a batch finished.
Replacing a Video, and What Happens to the Original
When a compressed video replaces an original, Lean creates the new asset with the original's creation date, location and favorite flag and adds it to every user album the original was in, so your library looks unchanged. The original is then deleted through Apple's own Photos deletion flow, which iOS confirms with you: it moves to Recently Deleted, where it stays restorable for 30 days. Choosing "Keep original too" skips the deletion, and declining the system prompt keeps everything.
Lean discards its own output if it is not at least 10% smaller than the source, and checks free disk space before each item. Cinematic, ProRes and spatial (MV-HEVC) recordings are detected and skipped rather than re-encoded.
Data Stored on Your Device
The following is stored locally and is never transmitted: your savings history and statistics, the pending-job list used to resume an interrupted batch, your quality presets and advanced settings, the paywall variant assigned to you, and the review-prompt bookkeeping. The App Group snapshot that feeds the widgets and the Live Activity holds only summary numbers, and it stays on the device.
Compressed files are written into your Photos library. Share Extension output is handed to whatever app or destination you choose.
Technology Used
Named for the record, because "on-device" should be verifiable rather than a slogan. Lean is a SwiftUI app built on Apple's frameworks only, with no third-party dependencies:
- AVFoundation — AVAssetReader and AVAssetWriter run the compression pipeline.
- VideoToolbox — hardware HEVC encoding on the device's media engine, Main 10 with the source's own color tags preserved for HDR.
- Photos (PhotoKit) — scanning, iCloud download, thumbnailing, and creating and deleting assets.
- StoreKit 2 — purchases and entitlements, verified by Apple.
- BackgroundTasks — a continued-processing task keeps a batch running after you leave the App.
- ActivityKit — the Live Activity and Dynamic Island progress.
- WidgetKit and App Intents — widgets, the Control Center control and the Shortcuts action.
- SwiftUI, Observation and Swift Charts — the interface and the savings chart.
None of these frameworks sends your content to the Service Provider, and the App adds no network layer of its own.
Analytics, Advertising, and Accounts
The Application contains no analytics or tracking SDK and no advertising framework. It does not build a profile of you, does not track you across apps or websites, does not require an account with the Service Provider, and does not sell or share personal information. If analytics or similar tools are added in a future version, this policy will be updated to describe them before that version ships.
Purchases
Lean is free to try on 3 videos. Lean Pro unlocks unlimited compression, background batches and Share at any size, and is offered weekly with a 3-day free trial, annually, or as one lifetime payment. Payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. The Service Provider does not receive or store your payment card details, and sees no information identifying you. Apple's handling of purchases, renewals and restores is governed by Apple's own terms and privacy practices.
Children
The Service Provider does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through Lean. The Application sends nothing over the network and requires no account, so there is nothing for it to collect.
If you have any question about this, contact the Service Provider at cihatsalik1@gmail.com.
Security
Because your videos stay on the device, their security is your device's security. The Service Provider recommends keeping iOS up to date and using a passcode and biometric lock. Nothing the Service Provider holds can be breached, because the Service Provider holds nothing.
Changes
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating this page and the "Last updated" information where shown. Continued use of the Application after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
